Pet Portraits!
The essence of the pet is what I like to capture, the individual, their personality ....their eyes.
Scottie Dogs
Scottish Terriers are a large part of my life - all have different personalities and their antics make me laugh.
Always available to be a subject for me to paint or draw. When not posing or sleeping in a pile of pillows they are out with me on the K-9 Agility courses or tracking and most recently K-9 free style working their little hearts out - they love it. Terriers love a job. Often I experiment with style and colors of my furry friends so a never ending array of Scottitude these are a few examples.....
I have had the privilege of painting many Scotties from around the globe. Take a moment and visit some of these remarkable little dogs.
Landscapes
Having lived in the Alaskan "Bush" for 15 years, mountains were and still are a continual source for inspiration. Watercolors are the perfect medium to catch the moment, the time, the light....
Florals
Summer in Alaska produces exceptional flowers with the 24 hours of daylight. I like to have fun painting flowers, their vibrant colors and a vast array to choose from. Fairbanks and the Interior is an endless source of models.
Ravens
Ravens are just part of Fairbanks. They are tricksters, clever, able to mimick many other animals and fun to watch. They can catch the wind and sore, tumble and play in mid air. When in the sun they look bejeweled with their gorgeous, lush plumes. This collection is just a fun example of the bejeweled tricksters that sit high in spruce trees above my cabin talking- jeering - and laughing with my Scotties before they head to town for their days work.
Special Moments
Kate Wood
Moments
Mountains have always drawn me into their being. Having lived in the Northern Foothills of the Alaska Range in earlier times, I had the same view daily, but it was never really the same. Everything affects the view: weather, time of day, and the time of year. There are changes minute to minute and in this exhibit, you will see many similar views capturing a special moment . My time in the Alaska Range not only fueled my fascination with mountains, but was a time when caribou were abundant and unassumingly inspired my imagination for Lichen Forrest .
As I go through daily life there are always special moments. A day in January driving by the Chena River I found the mist captivating .
I would like to thank Jane Atkinson and Doug Toelle for my many visits with the reindeer of Running Reindeer Ranch creating special moments only a few captured here.
Please enjoy these moments.
Wildlife with humor
Alaskan Wildlife is a favorite of mine to watch - I like to visulize the humor in some and attempt to catch the moment.
Sandhill Cranes
Sandhill Cranes come into Fairbanks in the spring as a stopping point before they head further north to ancient breeding grounds. Mid August they pass through Fairbanks again bringing the new young as they head south for the winter everyone loves the elegant, playful, long legged crane with their trills of the season.
Scratch Board
India ink on a hard white surface.
Scratched off with a variety of tools to produce desired effect in black and white, color may be added to highlight a particular area
Sled Dogs & Mushing, Winter
Having mushed sled dogs for more than 30 years I had many sled dogs spend their life with me and travel the wilds of Alaska.
These are just a few of my fur friends andsome signs of mushing.
Print Making
Several times a year I like to get messy and become a printmaker. I clear away my paper and watercolors and either use linoleum and cut my designs or my favorite Monotypes . Monotypes involve inking a plate I generally use Akua Ink then removing ink with various tools from cotton balls to felt snubs. Once the image is as you want it it is run through the printing press with paper , by applying a release agent to the plate and repeating the process one gets a ghost print - same image , but results different - hense "ghost" this may be repeated 3-4 times.
The Ghost print may be enhanced with watercolors or pastels creating different effects. Each of the few print will be one of a kind.

Many of us have sent our beloved Scotties "over the Bridge" and have loved the vision of them enjoying romping in the meadows. One of these beloved Scotties had other ideas once his arrival at the Bridge and has and is transforming Terrier Town into a thriving world of true Scottitude.
Excerpt from Ainsley (Angus Fala's little sister who is tending to matters at AWE) convinced that Angus is writing through her paws.....
"Then it hit me. What did I love more than kicking Husky Butt and taking Husky names? Boiled Eggs and Ice Cream! What if I opened up a Boiled Egg and Ice Cream Parlor? There wasn't one here yet I bet it would be popular. So I looked up, saw I was at the corner of Stoic Avenue and Stubborn Street.........."

Goats! Check out Collaborative in Color & Texture
After visiting a goat ranch - I became fascinated with the possibility of painting a collection of goats. Interesting enough back in my farm days I had a small herd of 6 goats. My goats were Nubian - fun, floppy eared goats. I have been looking at the many local (Alaskan) goats and have found a wide range of variety giving me the opportunity to have fun painting them. These have included African Boar, Nubian, a variety of Angora, and their Guardian dogs hopefully I will find more. November 2016 I have started this project.
Update 1-24-2017 Finding more beautiful subjects/models and filly feathered friends as well.
June 2017 I will be teaming up with Becky Hammond from White Fireweed Farm www.whitefireweedfarm.com (on Facebook: White Fireweed Farm, Freest Fancy Creations) for a collaborative show at 2 Street Gallery -Fairbanks, Alaska. (www.2streetgallery.com ) Becky will be adding hand crafted items made from the fleece of these fabulous animals. Spinning, knitting, felting and more while I continue in my painting frenzy of goats, geese, rabbits and what ever else strikes my fancy. I will be experimenting with relief prints and scratchboard. Updates as we progress.

Camps in the Interior - Interior Alaska
Living in Alaska has wonderful experiences in the great outdoors. Be it a weekend on a lake painting, in July at fish camp drying the colorful salmon, a fall moose camp, or a weekend of K9-Agility - camps vary as do the colors of the surroundings.
